HBO’s crime anthology series just got one step closer to a third season. We’ve learned that Mahershala Ali will be starring in True Detective Season 3. It’s a move that certainly makes sense, as Ali has beenon quite a hot streak lately, picking up an Oscar for his work in Moonlight and starring in the Netflix hit Luke Cage.
The series’ first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was a massive critical and ratings hit. However, the second season struggled to hit the same notes (despite still drawing solid ratings). It was up in the air whether there would be a True Detective Season 3, but writer Nic Pizzolatto has apparently been hard at work and getting some help from Deadwood and NYPD Blue writer David Milch.
Now, we know that a great set of actors doesn’t guarantee a great series. The second season had the likes of Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn and failed to hit its mark from a plotting perspective. However, the quality was there from an acting perspective, and it looks like True Detective Season 3 is on its way to a similar quality. If the scripts are coming together as well as HBO boss Casey Bloys suggests then we could be in for quite a resurgence.
It remains to be seen who will join Mahershala Ali, or when the show might be planned for release. But it’s certainly good news for fans of the series.
