Big news from Marvel, as they announced in an official press release that the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo will be directing The Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 & 2. The Russo’s jumped onto the Marvel scene by delivering arguably one of the company’s greatest films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and then signed on to direct the much anticipated Captain America: Civil War. Apparently the big dogs at Marvel have decided that they’ve made enough of an impression that they will essentially use the pair to finish of the Phase 3 films of the Marvel Universe road map, by taking over for Josh Whedon who is about to deliver us The Avengers: Age of Ultron later this month.
I personally was blown away by Captain America: The Winter Solider, and the Russo’s were obviously highly responsible for that. They’ve shown a big knack for this kind of stuff and quite frankly is Whedon is going to step away, it seems like the obvious move to transition them over. They’re going to be extremely busy, and it suggests that the tone and consistency of the films will all be quite similar. This could be viewed as a positive, while some may not think so as it is certainly important for each Marvel character and their film(s) to have their own unique feel.
Here’s a sections of Marvel’s statement:
As anticipation and excitement build to a fever pitch for Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the blockbuster sequel to the third-largest movie of all time, Marvel is proud to announce Joe and Anthony Russo will join the franchise as the directors of Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2.”
The Russo brothers first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” one of the top-grossing film’s from 2014, and are currently preparing to shoot Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.” The third film in the Captain America franchise will bring the classic storyline from the comics to life pitting Cap (Chris Evans) against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), as well as introducing Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with actor Chadwick Boseman ahead of his own film later in Phase 3.
The only real details we know about Infinity War is that they will revolve around the evil Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) and his attempts to gather and combine the Infinity Gems, which we know would be a little bit of bad for humanity. It will be an epic two part movie, and one would imagine it will be the biggest thing ever to come out of Marvel, which is saying something. Who will be writing the stories is unknown to this point, as Josh Whedon also wrote the previous Avengers movies. Whoever it is, they have a lot of pressure on their shoulders, but can rest easy knowing they have two very talented directors on board.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015 while The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 will drop on May 4 of 2018.
