The word is out that Robert Redford is set to appear in the upcoming Captain America sequel “The Winter Soldier.” In what role and capacity Redford will appear is not entirely known, but rumor has it that he may be taking a position in the Samuel L Jackson led group, S.H.I.E.L.D. This is great news for fans of the series, for the simple reason that Redford is a fantastic actor and adding him to any cast will benefit the film. It is an interesting and surprising piece of casting though, and it may be further sign that Redford is looking to get back into the swing of the acting scene. After his appearance in the 2007 film, Lions for Lambs he did not appear on screen for the next five years, until his recent film The Company You Keep which is set to be released in the U.S. on April 5th on limited release. Redford also directed this latest effort.
A question that a lot of folks will ask is does this mean that Redford will also be involved in some of the other movies that live within the “Avengers” family, or even the highly anticipated future sequel, The Avengers 2? I certainly hope so, and I would also like to hope that Redford will begin appearing in more movies of all kinds, not just super hero acting flicks.
A look back at some of the movies Redford has made over the years reveals an extensive list full of quality feature films. His filmography includes classics like The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The Presidents Men. He also appeared in some more modern films like Spy Game where he also shined, regardless of the success of the films themselves.
We will see what comes of this announcement and what level of involvement Redford will have with the Marvel franchises, but we can only hope it is a significant one.
