Reluctant Paul Rudd In New Ant Man Trailer

Marvel has set out it’s incredible 3-phased approach for film releases in the foreseeable future, and one that is right on the horizon is a new franchise all-together.  Ant Man will make his first big screen appearance, with Paul Rudd taking on the role of Scott Lang, who of course becomes the titled hero.  Ant Man wears a suit that allows him to shrink drastically, but gives him incredible strength, and this allows him to specialize in activities that are awfully similar to crime, but now used for the greater good.  Many of you, including myself, will be far less familiar with this franchise, which makes this entry even more intriguing.  Even more intriguing is how it will intertwine with the current Marvel Universe and it’s characters.

What I mean by that, is that there are some big implications suggested by the films trailer, and it’s cast list.  Of course, Scott Lang is not the original Ant-Man.  That would be Hank Pym, who will be played by Michael Douglas, and who mentors Scott Lang.  Comic fans will know that Hank was one of the original Marvel heroes, and one look at the cast list shows us that Peggy Carter (Hayley Altwell) and Howard Stark (John Slattery!) will appear.  So this may suggest some flashbacks, which are sure to fill in gaps left behind by previous Marvel films, especially the Captain America series!

One big question I have is just what kind of tone will the film have?  Paul Rudd’s casting might suggest a highly comic approach, but that isn’t really evident from the trailer so we’ll have to wait and find out.  With a cast that also includes Evangeline Lily, Corey Stoll and Michael Pena, it will be intriguing to see how Ant Man stacks up when it is released on July 17th, 2015.
