Rumors of Batman’s involvement in the upcoming DC Universe film Suicide Squad have been swirling for a while now, and today an Instagram post from Latino-Review’s Umberto Gonzalez has revealed some much more in depth details about how The Caped Crusader might play a part. We have been hoping and assuming that a cameo from Batman would come in the form of Ben Affleck’s older, more worn down version of the hero, and this still seems to hold true. But in terms of the actual involvement in the plot, the Instagram suggests that he will play a short but key role In bringing together the likes of Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Joker (Jared Leto) and of course Deathstroke (rumors still swirl on the part).
Here is the post from Umberto’s Instagram. Beware, SPOILERS could follow, depending on how true these statements turn out to be.

Details about THE GOD DAMN #BATMAN in #SUICIDESQUAD! #SPOILER #WARNING According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates. Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that's why he's so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all "the supers." Very cool stuff. #DC #DCCU #DCCOMICS #THEJOKER #AMANDAWALLER #THEDARKKNIGHTRETURNS
So it sounds like Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) will be attempting to use The Joker to track down Batman, because she needs him to help her track down the other desired members of the Suicide Squad and The Joker is the only person who might be able to find him. This makes sense well enough, but what is strange is this talk about Batman being some sort of Boogie Man. The film is set in the same time frame as Batman Vs. Superman when Batman is older, so presumably he’s already well known in Gotham and has a relationship with the police, like Jim Gordon and the government. So why would Amanda Waller and the government not know her?
Well, I have a suggestion. Perhaps Batman has aged a little more than we thought. I mean, if you look back to the earlier comics, like The Killing Joke for example, Jim Gordon is getting pretty old. So perhaps Ben Affleck’s Batman is really getting on, in his 50’s perhaps. Jim Gordon may be deceased, which explains why he isn’t supposed to be involved in this new DC Universe. Without Gordon, perhaps Batman disappeared from the bright lights a little, and over time the city began to forget about him and he faded into rumor and legend. What little appearances he does make may be within Gotham’s limits, and the rest of the country sees him as nothing more than a legend or even myth. This new government may not know him as well as the Gotham inhabitants, and therefore to them he is a Boogie Man, and there’s no Jim Gordon to tell them more.
It’s the only viable explaination I can see that doesn’t completely break the universe that has already been built. That doesn’t mean there aren’t others of course. What’s really interesting is that while his role in this film is only small, it does seem to be borrowing a lot from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns in terms of both Batman and The Joker, and while this could just be to strengthen this new Suicide Squad franchise, it seems like a lot of planning for just that. It could suggest that there is a larger role for future Batman movies involving both Affleck and Leto, and a challenger to Christopher Nolan’s crown as the master of The Dark Knight.
It’s all exciting stuff, and we can only hope that this new DC Universe that is picking up steam has what it takes to give Marvel a viable contender in the Superhero space, and at very lease it will just provide us with some awesome movies!
Suice squad is set to hit theaters in August of 2015.
