We’ve seen it many times before. It’s that moment when an action/comedy actor surprises you with a serious acting role and gets nominated for an Oscar.  I mean seriously, when “Ghostbusters” came out did anyone really believe that Venkman (Bill Murray) would ever be nominated for an Oscar? Or what about Saul (James Franco) from Pineapple Express? Queen Latifah? It seems every few years a very entertaining actor, who never really displayed any dramatic acting abilities, scores a role that gets them nominated for an Oscar.

Now I know this is a long shot because its an April release date and the Academy rarely selects anything from the first half of any given year, but maybe Matthew McConaughey can finally have his moment with “Mud.”

“Mud” is a film by Jeff Nichols that looks to truly showcase Matt’s acting talents. It is about two young boys who encounter a fugitive on a small island in the south. They form a friendship with this man and help him elude the police and bounty hunters that are fresh on his trail.

Just from the trailer I was wowed by McConaughey’s performance. And that is a sentence I once bet a man $50 that I would never say.

However, I am not so easily sold on Mr. Jeff Nichols. It seems I am the only person on the planet who believes his breakthrough film, “Take Shelter”, was very underwhelming.  I love metaphors, film art, and interpretation, but in all honesty, I had high hopes for “Take Shelter” and I thought it was a hot mess. With “Mud”, it looks like Nichols took a more literal route with his narrative, and I think that is a great idea.

“Mud” did very well at Cannes, scoring a Palme d’Or nomination. It also boasts a strong supporting cast with Oscar Winner Reese Witherspoon, Oscar Nominee Michael Shannon, and newcomer Tye Sheridan.

Check out the trailer and see if you think Matt has what it takes to get a little golden man. Things get “Mud”dy on April 26.
