MovieMelt’s Mock Draft
So with the 2013 NFL Draft underway, the crew here at MovieMelt decided we would hold a little draft of our own. I got to wondering, if there was a draft for Hollywood actors and actresses, how would it go? Who would go first, and who would slip down the board? With many of the best actors working well into their old age, will studios look for the young up and coming stars who are a little more risky, or the established veterans who will provide steady, but unspectacular performances and income.
Sounds like fun, right? Well, let’s give it a try. Now, in a real draft, there would be studios drafting the best actors and actresses, but in this instance I’m just going break out the draft order, and some analysis of each pick.
The First Round (Picks 1 – 15)
1. Ryan Gosling
With the first pick…………the studio selects: Mr. Ryan Gosling. This is a guy who can do it all and has it all in terms of pure Hollywood potential. He has already proved that he is a fantastic actor, with roles in ‘Half Nelson,’ and ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ and he has clear big money star potential. He’s got the style and the look, and he can pull off any genre from dark action in ‘Drive’ to charming comedy in ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’ The complete package is always a safe bet with the first pick.
2. Jessica Chastain
The second pick is an actress who can also do it all, close to winning an Oscar this past year for ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, and starring in such a variety of huge roles, Jessica Chastain is a sure fire winner. She is one of the best pure actresses out there, and is also capable of any genre or style. She is sophisticated, but beautiful enough to draw the big bucks. An Oscar or two are virtual guarantees for an actress of her caliber, and she is sure to hit it big at the box office too.
3. Tom Hardy
His massive, amazing and highly acclaimed performance in the smash hit ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ may mask what is clearly a career worthy of note. He has been fantastic in smaller roles such as ‘Bronson,’ and has proved he can hit the Hollywood audience with ‘Lawless’ and ‘Warrior.’ He is building a reputation as a tough guy, but his earlier work shows that he is a real, classic British actor at heart. This guy has unlimited potential and if it wasn’t for ‘This Means War’ he might be the number one pick.
Like most of our top 5-10 picks, this is an actress who could arguably be sitting at the top of the board as well, especially after her huge Best Actress victory for her role in ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ At such a young age, she has already been nominated twice when you include her lower budget film ‘Winter’s Bone’ which was arguably a better performance. She has also proved she can be the big budget action actress too, starring in X-Men: First Class. Another key we cannot ignore, is that after ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ there is no doubt that she is sexy enough to bring in the big bucks too.
5. Robert Downey Jr.
Starring in one of the biggest movies of all time, ‘The Avengers’ and the almost equally huge ‘Iron Man’ films which preceded it makes Rowney Jr an obvious top 5 pick. He was one of, if not the highest grossing actor of 2012, and this trend probably won’t subside any time soon. He will also be a sure fire Oscar winner at some point in his career. The only reason he slipped down to number 5 is that with Gwyneth Paltrow today announcing that there will not be a fourth ‘Iron Man’ installment, he is losing a massive money franchise. ‘The Avengers 2’ is still on the cards though, so the money will be huge in the first few years!
6. Ben Affleck
Big Ben Affleck is in what we like to call a resurgent point in his career. Not that long ago, Affleck would be an undrafted free agent, but now he is a must have for any studio. He is a fantastic actor, who continues to get better with age, shown by his roles in ‘The Town’ and ‘Argo.’ What really shoots him into the Top 10 actors on the draft board is his ability to also Direct great, great movies. He is able to bring his acting ability, but also after directing only high quality films including ‘Gone Baby Gone’ and the already mentioned, Oscar winning ‘Argo’ he is one of the biggest names out there.
Emma Stone could arguably cut into our top ten on comedy movies alone. Just look at ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ which was one of the most popular films of the year and showcased her fantastic talents. But recently she has been taking on quality project after quality project, including ‘The Help’ and ‘The Amazing Spiderman.’ After this she began showing up in movie news, being attached to more projects than she knows what to do with. This is always a sign of big things to come. Plus, she is hot as hell and she can definitely keep the mood light in the locker room!
8. Matthew McConaughey
Once categorized as nothing but a romantic comedy and fun adventure star, Matthew has transformed himself into one of the finest actors out there and is beginning to pick up steam in all markets. With his latest film ‘MUD’ generating him some Oscar buzz, and his most recent projects being massive commercial and critical successes, such as ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ and ‘Magic Mike’, this guy is on fire. Plus the ladies go absolutely nuts for the dude.
9. Leonardo DiCaprio
Then years ago, if you didn’t take Leo in the top 3 you were crazy. Since then, he has cooled off a little, and his unexplained inability to take home an Oscar no matter how much he does is alarming. However, the fact that he is always being mentioned in that conversation is in some ways proof of his quality, and his recent turn in ‘Django Unchained’ and his upcoming smash ‘The Great Gatsby’ suggest that he is going nowhere anytime soon.
Teetering on the edge of greatness is Bradley Cooper, a guy who got big with comedy hits such as ‘The Hangover’ but has now appeared as a legitimate leading man. He starred in an Oscar contender this year in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and has also put forth a critically acclaimed performance in the recent ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ alongside our first pick. Definitely a star, but the question is can he follow through on this year and continue the run.
11. Shia Labeouf
Another guy who I consider a risky first round pick, is young Shia. He has obviously made a name for himself in the smash hit ‘Transformers’ series, and has continued to perform well in big roles such as the ‘Wall Street’ sequel and ‘Lawless.’ However, it seems like he can’t quite get that huge, leading man piece. Maybe some roles in less big budget, high acting parts like the upcoming ‘The Company You Keep’ will help him prove his worth, once his youth wears off.
12. Meryl Streep
Every team needs that veteran presence in the locker room, and Meryl Streep will be the epitome of that with the twelfth pick. Nominated for more Oscars than can even be comprehended, Meryl is arguably the finest female actress of all time. Now, she is getting on a bit, and she certainly doesn’t have the hot young star thing going for her any more, but in terms of guaranteed good roles, and accolades year in year out, she is money.
13. Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig has proven that he can do the big part, and has been in all kinds of films over the past few years. However, what really gets him into the top 15 is his role as one of the most famous heroes ever, James Bond. The risk is there though. We know the James Bond franchise is going nowhere, ever. The problem is, we just don’t know how long he will play the part. He is getting old so will they want him? Or will he get tired of the part? Can we get a contract clause guaranteeing ten more Bond appearances if we draft him? Sold.
Well, again, a few years ago Bale would have been right at the top. He has been one of the highest grossing actors of the past few years and has been in some fantastic movies such as ‘The Prestige’ and of course ‘The Dark Knight’ as Batman. Here is the problem. That franchise is over, and it isn’t coming back. Where can he go from there?
15. Brad Pitt
Teetering on the edge of the first round is Brad Pitt, a massive Hollywood star who has been in enough great movies to retire happily now. That is part of the problem. He has done it all, and now everything just seems a little, well, plain. He doesn’t really need the massive blockbuster smash roles anymore, but he has been in some great films to showcase his acting such as ‘The Tree of Life’ and ‘Benjamin Button.’ Maybe the upcoming ‘World War Z’ can shift him closer to the top?
Well, there it is. There are obviously some massive omissions. Some of the finest actors ever, such as Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro didn’t make our list. But you have to remember, we are thinking ahead. Those guys will continue to do great work, but they don’t necessarily need to and they can just settle in with the nice roles they want to take. Then there are people like Kristen Stewart who will never sniff my list, and lads like Daniel Radcliffe, who I really like but just don’t think they are going any where.
What do you think? Would love to hear your draft order….?
