First True Detective Season 2 Trailer Sets June Release

The much anticipated second season of HBO’s True Detective has been formally introduced with a brand new teaser trailer on HBO’s YouTube channel.  Personally, I am ridiculously excited to see this as last years True Detective ranks as one of, if not the best drama series I’ve ever seen grace television.  Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson lit the screen on fire in last years series, and this year they’ve been replaced in an all new True Detective tale, by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch, which is a pretty good cast in its own right.

The trailer suggests that True Detective Season 2 will be pretty similar to the first season in terms of tone, and that tone is very, very dark.  There are plenty of close ups of grizzled faces full of regret and sadness, and gloomy landscapes on the grimier corners of town.  We’ve heard rumors of massive Eyes Wide Shut style orgies, enormous railway projects and crooked cops.  It’s all good stuff, and writer Nic Pizzolatto has shown that he knows exactly how to bring this kind of material alive.

Season 2 will be set in California, and revolve around the death of a city mayor.  Three cops from different areas are tasked with figuring out the crime, but of course land themselves in a much deeper world of evil.  Colin Farrell plays Ray Velcoro (who looks like he might be shaping up to be the next Rust Cohle), a cop who is under the thumb of mobsters and crooked cops.  Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, the moral center of the show most likely, as she is slated to be the one who battles corruption and stays straight.  Then Taylor Kitsch jumps in as a former military man turned cop with a terrible past.  Then the unlikely star, Vince Vaughn will be the former criminal who is attempting to go straight by bringing a high speed railroad to the state with the help of his wife, played by Kelly Reilly.

One can only assume that this railroad scheme plays a huge role in the mystery of the show, but we don’t know much more than that.  We get to find out in June when True Detective Season 2 hits HBO.
