Felicity Jones Gets The Lead In Star Wars: Rogue One

With all kinds of rumors swirling about the upcoming Star Wars spin-off Star Wars: Rogue One, we’ve been given some hard information that we can take to the bank.  Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilms have made it as official as it possibly could be that Rogue One will be hitting theaters in December of 2016, and most importantly that Felicity Jones, who recently had great success as Jane Hawking in The Theory Of Everything, will be taking the leading role.  What exactly that role will be is still not clear, but we’ll take what we can get right?

We’ve known for a while that the film will be directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Chris Weitz, but the additional detail that classic Star Wars composer John Williams, who has done every other film in the franchise will be replaced for this spin-off by Alexandre Desplat, who also worked on Godzilla with Edwards.  This is actually some really significant and surprising news, but one has to believe that it is simply due to the fact that William’s would just be too busy.  Perhaps they also want these spin-offs to have their own vibe and feel, to prevent overloading the audience with the same thing.

This concept of overload is one that I bring up because of the fact that Disney announced their desire to release a Star Wars film annually, and spin-offs like Star Wars: Rogue One will allow them to do that, by filling the gaps between the primary Episodes.  Rumors regarding the plot are also rife, but actually facts are thin.  We know that Luke Skywalker and Wedge were both called ‘Rogue One’ as a part of the Rogue Squadron at one point or another, so it’s safe to assume it involves the squadron in a huge way, and a rumor that has been very strong is that the film involves a plot to steal plans for the Death Star.  Other rumors include the fact that the film is actually set in the past, with a young Bobba Fett and other bounty hunters making appearances.

Felicity Jones …

Perhaps Felicity Jones will play one of the Rogue Squadron pilots, and perhaps even Rogue One?  Who knows what will happen, but what we do know is that the more Star Wars we can get the better, as long as they’re done with the right amount of care.  Gareth Edwards showed some big scale promise with Godzilla, and while I can’t imagine he’ll impress like J.J. Abrams, I’m sure he will do the franchise justice.  The last bit of news that’s attached is that Episode VIII also has a release date, which I fear is tentative, but sits at May of 2017.  That’s actually just around the corner, and it’s crazy to think that things could be happening at such a pace.

Let the force be with you Abrams and company!
