You can pretty much bank on at least one big name buddy cop movie coming out each calendar year, and usually more than that. ‘2 Guns’ is the latest in the genre and it just released it’s first official trailer, with Oscar Winner Denzel Washington teaming up with Mark Wahlberg as two bank robbers who don’t know that the other is an undercover agent for their own respective agencies. Of course, the two are double crossed and end up having to start trusting each other in order to get out of their predicament. It’s a pretty common formula unfortunately, that we have seen many times before, and the trailer below doesn’t suggest there will be much in the way of originality here.
I’ve heard a lot of people say that were very excited for ‘2 Guns’ having seen the trailer. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t. It wasn’t a bad trailer by any means, but in all honesty the film looks a little underwhelming. For a start, what I see is that they’ve cast Denzel Washington to play Denzel Washington, and Mark Wahlberg to play, well, Mark Wahlberg. This has plagued the careers of both of these actors. Well actually, plagued is a bit of a stretch. I don’t think they’re plagued at all. They make more money in a day than I do in a year, and they have fun doing it. But never the less, this is probably the only criticism they, or their films, ever get.
Then there’s the fact that the trailer suggests that the movie is going to make a clear attempt to be funny. It will be serious at times, but they will be trying to insert that same old buddy cop comedy aspect, maybe a little more even than a ‘Lethal Weapon’ and a little less than a ‘Rush Hour.’ Here’s the thing though. I just don’t think Mark Wahlberg can do funny. I just don’t. I thought he was terrible in ‘The Other Guys’ and terrible in ‘Ted.’ Sometimes the ‘tough guy acts stupid and it makes it funnier because he’s normally so tough‘ system works. But it just doesn’t for Marky Mark. Then there’s Denzel. A fantastic actor, but he just doesn’t do funny. When was the last time you saw Denzel in a comedy? Never. The last one was ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ back in 1996, and if you’re lucky you never saw that one either. His humor seems forced and unnatural in the trailer, and my guess is that’s why he doesn’t do comedies.
But, all that being said, maybe this is a chance for Denzel to break out and try something different, and maybe have some success with it. Although it may seem like the same old same old action flick, when you really look deeper, this is not a film Denzel has made before. Maybe working with a guy of Denzel’s character will bring out some extra flare from Wahlberg. Who knows. At least the action will probably be great, and I’m sure between the two of them I’m sure the film will post a 9.7 on the bad ass meter. The film will also be as cheesy as that last statement.
Check out the trailer and see what you think.
