So not so long back we brought news of an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s acclaimed novel ‘Gone Girl’ which David Fincher is in line to direct. It appears that Flynn is on quite the roll, as talks are out about another one of her successful novels, ‘Dark Places’ which has recently been linked to Charlize Theron, as star and producer.
The book revolves around what will likely be Theron’s character, a woman whose family were murdered by an apparent satanic cult when she was a very young girl, and who testifies against her brother as responsible for the crime. As an adult she is then approached by a group who seem to think that all was not as it seemed all those years ago, and things go from there. I haven’t read the book (I certainly plan to now), so this is about all I know in terms of details, but it already sounds pretty interesting to me.
The project has popped back into the spotlight, as it appears the next actress to join the cast is up and coming star Chloe Moretz, who is also set to appear in the upcoming comedy action flick ‘Kick Ass 2’ and horror remake ‘Carrie.’ She has already shown quite the affinity for the darker, horror roles such as her fantastic effort as a young vampire in ‘Let Me In’ and her upcoming piece in ‘Carrie.’ Even her comedy role in ‘Kick Ass’ was extremely dark, and nothing to take the kiddies to go see. So the fact that she is linked to a film involving satanic cults and murder does not surprise me in the slightest. Nothing is official yet however, so we will have to keep an eye on this one.
The screenplay was written, and will be directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner. His last film, a French language movie, was ‘Sarah’s Key’ and was a very effective drama which was widely applauded. Hopefully he can springboard from this into the big stage, and utilize the fantastic acting ability of Charlize Theron to make this ‘Dark Places’ film into something worthy of the novel it is based on.
