Actor Spotlight: Top 10 George Clooney Movies

 george clooney movies

It has been a solid year for George Clooney.  Well to be honest, it has been a solid career for George Clooney.  More than solid.  He’s been nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two of them, for Best Supporting Actor (Syriana) and Best Picture (as a Producer for Argo).  He’s also one of the most swooned over stars in history by the ladies.  So needless to say there is an awful lot to choose from in terms of the best George Clooney movies, but we’re going to give it a try.

So here is Movie Melt’s list of the Top 10 George Clooney movies ever (to date!).

10. Out of Sight (1998)

Clooney and J-Lo burned up the screen.

One of the earliest George Clooney movies, it was him at his finest in Steven Soderbergh‘s thriller about an ex-con who’s bank robbery goes wrong, and ends up attracted to the woman on the opposite end of the law who is trying to bring him in.  With a fantastic chemistry between Clooney and J-Lo, this film had excitement, comedy and drama and set the stage for Clooney as a future star.

9. Syriana (2005)

Clooney is caught in the corrupted oil industry

Here Clooney stars alongside Matt Damon as a C.I.A operative on a mission to assassinate a leader within the corrupt oil-industry.  With this being his last assignment, of course things don’t go to plan and he falls victim to a U.S turncoat and goes from hero to scapegoat, facing moral and life threatening challenges.  The film is high on complexity but if you’re up for it, it’s great stuff.

8. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Glooney plays Danny Ocean in this classic remake

The original Rat-Pack version of this heist film was a classic, but this modern retelling with an absolutely colossal all-star cast did not let it down in the slightest.  Clooney takes on the title role as Danny Ocean, but is helped out by the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle.  Another Steven Soderbergh film for Clooney, this is just good old fashioned fun.

7. Michael Clayton (2007)

Here Clooney is a classic anti-hero in the world of corrupt law.

In Michael Clayton, Clooney delves into the world of corrupt legal work, and plays a strong anti-hero lawyer who fixes problems for major companies.  However, with his life and possibly career spiraling out of control, he is unable to get out of the game when he wants to and is forced to fight through one last big case.  Another showcase of his immense acting talents.

6. Good Night, And Good Luck (2005)

Clooney directed this gem about the power and struggle of real journalism

Here is one of Clooney’s own directorial efforts, and it was a damn good one.  He went black and white for this powerful and entertaining feature about a group of real journalists in the 50’s, and one in particular who wants to take on a corrupt Senator despite the mental toll that it will take on him and his career.  Clooney assembled a fantastic veteran cast for this lesser known gem, so if you haven’t seen it, go do so.

5. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Clooney takes on animation in this surprise classic

The only animated movie on this list was a bit of a surprise hit for me, as Clooney took on the lead role as a cunning chicken-stealing fox in this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book.  A great set of voice actors brought this one to life, and it became wildly entertaining, funny and meaningful especially for fans of the book.

4. Three Kings (1999)

Clooney teamed up with Wahlberg and Ice Cube in this Gulf War hit

One of my favorite George Clooney movies is this Gulf War thriller about three soldiers with varying backgrounds that find themselves survivors as the Gulf War ends, who aren’t quite sure that they feel the value of what they’re supposed to have achieved.  They set out on a mission of their own to steal some of Saddam Hussein’s own bounty, that ends up being much more than just that, as they realize that the United States hasn’t quite liberated everyone just yet.

3. The Descendants (2011)

Clooney was Oscar nominated for this touching family drama/comedy

This Oscar nominated family drama-comedy stars Clooney as a man who’s wife is injured in an accident and becomes bed ridden, her death just a matter of having the plug pulled.  He is forced to reconnect with his two young daughters, and forced to deal with the devastating reality that his wife had been cheating on him.  Often times funny, but often very sad, George is amazing in Alexander Payne’s modern classic.

2. Gravity (2013)

Clooney teamed up with Sandra Bullock in this visual masterpiece

One of my favorite movies of the year, Gravity is one of the most visually amazing movies in history and also out of nowhere it is one of the best George Clooney movies ever made.  He plays a veteran astronaut on his last mission, and gives us some of the most poignant and interesting moments of dialogue in the film, as Bullock takes on most of the action.  In limited screen time Clooney still found a way to charm audiences.

1. Up in the Air (2009)

george clooney movies
Perhaps his finest work, Clooney is trying to fill a void in his life

Movie Melt’s choice for the best George Clooney movie ever is this Oscar nominated comedy/drama from Jason Reitman.  Here he plays a company man whose job is to travel the country firing people, a task which he has become a master at.  However, when he is unexpectedly grounded by the news that they want to make this a remote task, he takes on the job of training a young addition played by Anna Kendricks.  Throw in a rare romance that becomes more than just one night with Vera Farminga, and Clooney’s Ryan begins to realize that he might have been missing out on what life is really about.

What do you think about our Top 10?  Anything we missed?  Let us know?
