12 Years A Slave Trailer
In the wake of the Trayvon Martin trail verdict, it is a time of immense racial tension in the United States. Race is a topic that will also be covered in great detail on the big screen, and to get even more specific, the topic of slavery is often portrayed. It has been a topic covered often recently, partially with Oscar nominated ‘Lincoln’ and also nominated Django Unchained. Well now, director Steve McQueen is bringing us another, with ’12 Years A Slave,’ a film which tells the story of a free man who is tricked into slavery in pre-Civil War America. Check out the trailer here:
The first thing that stands out about this film is the fantastic cast list, which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor in the starring role, but the likes of Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti and Paul Dano. That alone gives this film a great chance of success. Then we factor in Steve McQueen, whose last film, Shame also starred Fassbender, and was a truly hard hitting, pull no punches type of feature that was critically acclaimed. With the subject matter, the film is likely to be just as hard hitting, and McQueen ought to be able to flex his muscles with this one.
The film is sure to generate some Oscar buzz, especially being later in the year. However, it’s original release date was set for around December, but has now been moved forward to October. This is interesting, and how it will effect it’s Oscar buzz we will have to find out. Based on the cast, subject matter and director, I would be really surprised if we don’t see a nomination here. But what looks great on paper doesn’t always guarantee success, so we will have to wait and see.
With the recent trend of movies about slavery being extremely successful again, we wonder how long before the subject is over done, and if this film will be the cherry on top of the recent trend. It is a fantastic opportunity for Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is certainly well known for being a fantastic actor, to really make a name for himself and put forth the performance that defines a career. Playing Solomon Northrup could be that role that doesn’t come around often, so hopefully he does his best with it.
The film will be released in a limited fashion on October 18th.
